Venture capital targeted | Business Matters

The UK is the centre of venture capital in Europe, but this kind of funding can be more difficult to secure in challenging economic times. To help UK-based entrepreneurs fulfil their full potential by expanding globally, UKTI has established a new Venture Capital Unit which will work closely with the BVCA and the venture community.

Trade and Investment Minister Lord Green said:??The Government is committed to making Britain the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business. It is essential that entrepreneurs have access to the right funding to turn their ideas into successful companies.

?Through this agreement UKTI and the BVCA will work closely together to promote the UK as an international centre for venture capital, highlight the successes of UK companies and engage with overseas investors.

Matt Kenseth to leave Roush at end of season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? NASCAR points leader Matt Kenseth, one of the longest-tenured drivers in the series, is leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the season.

He will be replaced in the No. 17 Ford ? the car he has driven for all but one of his 452 career starts ? by Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kenseth's long relationship with Ford will apparently come to an end. He is believed to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing, either in Joey Logano's No. 20 Toyota or a fourth unannounced team.

Why? Good question. The team offered no answers in the sudden divorce of one of NASCAR's longest active relationships. Only Jeff Gordon, with Hendrick Motorsports since 1993, has been with his team longer than Kenseth has been with Jack Roush.

"I'd like to thank Matt Kenseth for his many years of loyal service," co-owner Roush said Tuesday. "Matt has been an integral part of this organization for well over a decade, and we are extremely appreciative of his accomplishments and contributions to the team, and will always consider him a part of the Roush Fenway family."

Kenseth and teammate Greg Biffle are ranked 1st and 2nd in the Sprint Cup Series, clearly poised to make a run at the championship. Kenseth opened the season with his second Daytona 500 victory, and has 11 top-10 finishes through 16 races.

Kenseth did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, but tweeted about his departure.

"I'm very thankful to Jack Roush for the opportunities he's given me over the past 14 years. Together we have enjoyed a lot of success," he posted. "And as a team we are committed as ever to the remainder of the 2012 season and chasing a 3rd sprint cup title for Jack and RFR."

With Roush, Kenseth has built a career worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. Besides the wins at Daytona, he has won 22 Cup races overall, and the 2003 championship. In the Nationwide Series, Kenseth has won 26 races driving for Roush.

His relationship with current general manager Robbie Reiser, like Kenseth a native of Wisconsin, dates at least to 1997, when Kenseth first drove Reiser's No. 17 entry. It was eventually merged into the Roush organization, and Reiser became Kenseth's crew chief at Roush in 2000, Kenseth's rookie season.

"Matt and I broke into this sport together, learned the ropes and were able to bring home a championship," Reiser said. "Over the 20 years we have worked with each other, Matt has been a fierce competitor and become a close friend, not only for me, but as a mentor to young drivers like Ricky. I wish Matt nothing but the best for the next phase of his career, and know that we'll remain close."

There was speculation last weekend at Sonoma that Kenseth was leaving to join JGR, which is in a contract year with Logano. The team also has room to expand to a fourth car, and it is possible Gibbs officials are trying to move Kenseth in and keep Logano at the same time.

Team president J.D. Gibbs did not respond to a request for a comment Tuesday, and said at Sonoma he could not talk about Kenseth.

Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing, said the blue oval brand is was disappointed Kenseth is leaving.

"He will be certainly missed by us and the Ford Racing fans," Allison said. "We are thankful for Matt's winning efforts and championship-caliber success with the Roush and Ford racing programs these past 16 years, both on and off the track. We will focus on this year and look forward to more success on the track in his No. 17 Ford Fusion this season."

Kenseth's car has had sponsorship woes the last few years, and Roush is funding a large portion of this year's schedule himself for the 40-year-old Kenseth. The organization dropped David Ragan and its fourth team because of a lack of sponsorship at the end of last season, and also ponied up significant money to re-sign Carl Edwards last season. Roush also signed Biffle to a contract extension last season.

The team desperately needs a slot for the 24-year-old Stenhouse, who is locked into a long-term contract but has nowhere to go in Roush's Cup lineup. The organization has a similar problem with 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who is also in a long-term contract and had his Nationwide Series team shuttered earlier this season because of no funding.

Stenhouse will be far cheaper than Kenseth in terms of salary, and he is much younger and clearly has a future with the organization.

"We feel that he is not only a key piece of our team's future, but a key piece of the future of the sport," Roush said of Stenhouse. "Roush Fenway is an organization with a wonderful past and present, as well as an extremely promising future, and I can't think of a better candidate than Ricky to usher in the next era of success for the team."

It's unusual, though, for a team and driver to decide to part ways during a championship run. Roush technically has three shots at the Sprint Cup title, as Biffle has proven to be just as strong as Kenseth this season. And Edwards, who tied Tony Stewart last year for the championship but lost the title on a tie-breaker, could still qualify for the 12-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

Roush, meanwhile, doesn't think Kenseth's departure will hurt the No. 17 team's championship hopes.

"The No. 17 is positioned extremely well this season, and I'm committed to providing the team the best resources to continue their run for the 2012 championship," he said. "I have no doubt that Matt will do his part."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some soul is leaving Broadway ? the 2010 Tony Award-winning musical "Memphis" is closing up shop.

Producers said Tuesday that the Joe DiPietro-written musical will play its last performance on Aug. 5 after 30 previews and 1,166 regular performances. It opened in October 2009.

While it has not yet recouped its initial investment, producers hope they will by the time the show ends.

The show may be leaving Broadway but there's plenty of "Memphis" to go around: A national tour is entering its second year and there are plans for a London production.

"Memphis," the story of a white disc jockey in Memphis who brought black music to a white audience in the 1950s, won four Tonys, including best book, best original score and best orchestrations.

MIAMI (AP) ? Tropical Storm Debby whipped Florida with bands of drenching rain Monday while its center was nearly stationary in the Gulf of Mexico. Its slow progress meant the most pressing threat from the storm was flooding, not wind.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for parts of Florida as the storm parked offshore. A tropical storm warning for the coast of Alabama was discontinued early Monday. Yet even with the storm's center far from land, it lashed Florida with heavy rains and spawned isolated tornadoes that killed at least one person. Another person was missing in rough surf off Alabama.

Residents in several counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the threat of flooding. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast. In several locations, homes and businesses were damaged by high winds authorities believe were from tornadoes.

Debby's center was essentially stationary about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla., early Monday. Debby's top sustained winds decreased to near 50 mph (85 kph). The forecast map indicated the storm could inch forward through the week, eventually coming ashore over the Panhandle. However, a storm's path is difficult to discern days in advance.

Underscoring the unpredictable nature of tropical storms, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning Sunday afternoon for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby wasn't likely to turn west. At one point, forecasters expected the storm to come ashore in that state.

"There are always going to be errors in making predictions. There is never going to be a perfect forecast," said Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. The storm is moving slowly, allowing its clouds more time to unload rain. A public advisory said parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 25 inches.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that several tornadoes moved through the area southeast of Tampa, damaging homes.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays said a woman was found dead in a house in Venus that was destroyed in the storm. A child found in the same house was taken to the hospital. No further information was available on the child's condition or either person's age.

Authorities urged residents to leave low-lying neighborhoods in Franklin, Taylor and Wakulla counties because of flooding. Shelters were open in the area.

Wind tore the roof off a marina in St. Pete Beach, and a pier was heavily damaged, said Tom Iovino, a Pinellas County government spokesman. He said no injuries were reported.

In Orange Beach, Ala., a 32-year-old man disappeared Sunday in rough surf kicked up by the storm, said Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Torry James. Further information wasn't immediately available.

As of Sunday, 23 percent of oil and gas production in the region had been suspended, according to a government hurricane response team. Employees have been evacuated from 13 drilling rigs and 61 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm was not expected to result in higher oil and gas prices.

"It's largely a non-event for oil," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Abstract

Background:Little is known about engagement in multiple health behaviours in childhood cancer survivors.Methods:Using latent class analysis, we identified health behaviour patterns in 835 adult survivors of childhood cancer (age 20-35 years) and 1670 age- and sex-matched controls from the general population. Behaviour groups were determined from replies to questions on smoking, drinking, cannabis use, sporting activities, diet, sun protection and skin examination.Results:The model identified four health behaviour patterns: 'risk-avoidance', with a generally healthy behaviour; 'moderate drinking', with higher levels of sporting activities, but moderate alcohol-consumption; 'risk-taking', engaging in several risk behaviours; and 'smoking', smoking but not drinking. Similar proportions of survivors and controls fell into the 'risk-avoiding' (42% vs 44%) and the 'risk-taking' cluster (14% vs 12%), but more survivors were in the 'moderate drinking' (39% vs 28%) and fewer in the 'smoking' cluster (5% vs 16%). Determinants of health behaviour clusters were gender, migration background, income and therapy.Conclusion:A comparable proportion of childhood cancer survivors as in the general population engage in multiple health-compromising behaviours. Google removed 640 videos from YouTube in the second half of last year amid fears they promoted terrorism.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) made a request for five user accounts to be closed for allegedly promoting terrorism.

Google agreed and deleted the 640 videos.

Details were released in the internet giant's latest Transparency Report, which reveals requests by international authorities to remove material.

Though Google agreed with Acpo's request, it repeatedly refused to comply with others.

Canada's Passport Office asked for footage to be removed of a Canadian citizen urinating on his passport and then flushing it down the toilet.

Google refused and also would not bow to a request from Pakistan's Ministry of Information Technology to delete six videos satirising its army and senior politicians.

However, the search engine did take action at certain times.

A German court order resulted in the removal of 898 search results linking to forums and blogs containing statements about a government agency and one of its employees that the court determined were not credible.

Google also received a request to remove 70 YouTube videos for allegedly violating the German Children and Young Persons Act.

It restricted some of the videos from view in Germany in accordance with local laws.

Google acceded to a request to block more than 100 YouTube videos in Thailand allegedly insulting its monarchy - which is a crime in the country.

Google also terminated four YouTube accounts responsible for videos that allegedly contained threatening and harassing content after complaints by different US law enforcement agencies.

Hungary, Russia and Turkey had 0% of their requests partially or fully complied with where as 93% of America's requests were successful according to Google's figures.

The internet search giant, which releases its own transparency report bi-annually, has noticed a surprising rise in requests to remove content from its sites.

Top 30: Brazil led the way for court-ordered requests, followed by the U.S., Germany and Argentina. The UK asked made 12 requests

In many cases Google has shown it?s not playing ball, and denying many of the requests to take out video content and politically-charged blogs.

Spain asked that Google remove 270 blog and article links, and they were told no.

The same thing happened in Poland, where Google was asked to take away content critical of the government, and the company refrained.

When Pakistan asked if the company would remove satires of its politicians, Google said no.

U.S. authorities wished to remove about 187 materials, and Google allowed 68 per cent of that number.

Google complied with about 65 per cent of the requests it received in total over the last six months.

Senior policy analyst at Google, Dorothy Chou, said in a blog: "This is the fifth data set that we've released. Just like every other time, we've been asked to take down political speech.?

She added: ?It's alarming not only because free expression is at risk, but because some of these requests come from countries you might not suspect - western democracies not typically associated with censorship.'

Google already closed its China-based search engine - but users in China can still access Google searches in Hong Kong.

China censors the results - but Google has now added a feature that suggests alternatives for search terms that might result in blocked results.

Google's announcement of the 'new feature' did not mention of Beijing's extensive Internet controls.

But it comes after filters were tightened so severely in recent weeks that searches fail for some restaurants, universities or tourist information.

Authorities were aiming to stamp out talk about an embarrassing scandal over the fall of a rising Communist Party star.

Google closed its China-based search engine in 2010 to avoid cooperating with government censorship.

President Barack Obama is out of the country for a few days but hardly off the campaign trail.

He's attending a summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, of 20 world leaders and the top agenda item ? the European debt mess ? will likely influence the U.S. presidential race if things worsen.

The crisis is dragging down global growth and Obama's re-election prospects with it.

Obama welcomed as "positive" Sunday's victory in Greece of a party willing to cooperate with Europe to keep Greece in the eurozone. Obama spoke alongside Mexican President Felipe Calderon, the summit host.

But early market optimism over the Greek vote faded somewhat Monday as borrowing costs for Spain, another financially troubled country, surged to alarming levels.

Meanwhile, Republican Mitt Romney continued his bus tour of key Midwestern battleground states that are also likely to sway the November outcome. And the European crisis wasn't far off stage.

"One of the things I think about is whether America's going to hit a Greece-style wall," Romney told a rally in Janesville, Wis. "Spending a trillion a year more than we take in is leading us to Greece," he said in a reference to recent recession-aggravated U.S. budget deficits topping $1 trillion.

If elected, he pledged, "a dollar will be worth something down the road and we will have a strong and stable foundation fiscally."

Romney also worked to capitalize on the recent big GOP win in the state with Republican Gov. Scott Walker's victory in a contentious recall election. Usually Democratic, Wisconsin now seems in play and Republicans are reaching for a win.

"We've turned things around in Wisconsin. It's time to elect a leader who can turn things around for America," Walker said in introducing Romney.

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) ? Germany advanced without fanfare to a quarterfinal against Greece after grinding out a 2-1 victory over Denmark on Sunday at the European Championship.

The Danes were eliminated after the two teams finished their Group B campaigns.

Lukas Podolski opened the scoring for Germany in the 19th minute and Lars Bender slotted home the winner in the 80th after Michael Krohn-Dehli had equalized for Denmark in the first half.

"It's absolutely a day of joy," Bender said. "I'll be thinking back to this day a long, long time. We have a positive spirit in the team."

Germany played without flair, but controlled possession and were never really challenged by the Danes, who go home after stunning the Netherlands in the first match but losing to Portugal in the second.

"We can be satisfied with our effort but not with the result," Denmark midfielder William Kvist said. "I think we proved that we can play against the big teams. We won (against the Netherlands) and we didn't lose big. We showed that we can play against the best."

Germany seized the initiative from the kickoff and came close twice before Podolski, playing his 100th international match, scored his first goal of the tournament.

Mario Gomez set him up with a deft backheel touch following Thomas Mueller's low cross from the right flank.

Denmark replied just five minutes later with Krohn-Dehli heading in the equalizer from a set piece that stunned the German defense. A corner found Nicklas Bendtner who headed the ball into the area where Krohn-Dehli nodded home his second goal at Euro 2012.

Jakob Poulsen missed a chance to put Denmark in the driver's seat at the start of the second half when his shot grazed the outside of German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's right post.

After that scare, the Germans were firmly in charge and denied Denmark any real chance of getting back into the game.

Coach Morten Olsen's men were already looking tired when Bender, replacing suspended right back Jerome Boateng, picked up a pass from Mesut Oezil and made it 2-1.

"We should have gone ahead by two or three goals in the first half, but Denmark scored virtually out of nowhere," Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

"I think we had the game well under control. You get the feeling Denmark doesn't want to score, that they don't want to go forward, but suddenly they push ahead," he said. "We had a lot of possession and I was sure that we would score and advance."

It was the first competitive match between the two countries since the 1992 European Championship final, when the Danes stunned the Germans with a 2-0 win to become champions.

Hoping for another upset, Olsen changed his lineup by moving playmaker Christian Eriksen to the right flank, replacing injured winger Dennis Rommedahl in a five-man midfield.

But the move had little effect as Philipp Lahm effectively closed down the talented 20-year-old, who leaves Euro 2012 without fulfilling expectations of an international breakthrough.

Olsen praised the Germans, saying they played "fantastic football" that confirmed they are among the favorites to win the European title.

He regretted that Denmark wasn't able to salvage a point in the previous game against Portugal. The Danes gave up a goal in the final minutes for a 3-2 loss.

"Having said that, I think we have done a really good job in this tournament," Olsen said. "This team has a future."

Germany finished top of the group with a perfect record of three wins and now faces Euro 2004 champion Greece on Friday in Gdansk.

ABI: Apple and Samsung have over 55 percent of the smartphone space, 90 percent of its money-making

Tech finance sleuth Horace Dediu was clearly astute when he determined that it's really Apple and Samsung's smartphone world, and we just live in it. ABI Research just estimated that, combined, the iPhone and Galaxy creators were responsible for more than 90 percent of the profits in the first quarter of 2012 -- mostly through carving out more than 55 percent of the total market share for themselves. We already know that only a handful of companies, like HTC, were making any kind of profit at the same time; ABI, however, has underscored just how much of a mountain Nokia has to climb to reclaim its glory days. For Nokia to completely make up for Symbian's decline, shipments of Lumia phones will have to jump a staggering 5,000 percent this year. The Finnish phone maker is certainly hopeful, but with the 80 percent growth rate in China mostly being led by locals like Huawei and ZTE, that's no mean feat.
