Exclusive: Behind The Scenes Of Stephenie Meyer's 'The Host'

MTV News visits the set of the book-to-film adaptation to get the juicy details on the Meyer's parasitic story.

Hey Stephenie Meyer fans, have we got a treat for you. MTV News got a behind-the-scenes look at Andrew Niccol's big-screen adaptation of Meyer's "The Host."The sci-fi romance is Meyer's first adult novel, and we were lucky enough to get an exclusive sneak peek when we visited the set last month.

"The Host" is the story of Melanie Stryder (played by Saoirse Ronan), one of the last humans to have avoided capture by an alien race called Souls. The Souls operate more like parasites in that they invade human bodies and erase their personalities. The film follows the unlikely partnership of Melanie and her parasite as they seek out the last of Melanie's human relatives and her love Jared (Max Irons).

For Ronan, whom we witnessed running down corridors and jumping off tall precipices, her dual roles are a lot more physical than she expected, but she has relished the opportunity to flex those new action-type muscles.

"I didn't expect it to be so physical. I've been in a harness quite a bit, I've done stunts, I jumped off a balcony it was 30 feet in the air," Ronan revealed with pride. "That was pretty cool."

Speaking to the film's romance, Irons admitted that he enjoyed the struggle Jared has in wanting to be close to Melanie, but knowing in the back of his mind that he can't. We watched Ronan and Irons film one of their more emotionally charged scenes that involved Jared trying not to kiss Melanie.

"Jared's struggle is when Melanie returns, she was the love of his life and he lost her, but then she walks back into his life," Irons explained. "He wants to hold her, but the rational part of his mind is saying she needs to be killed."

From the looks of things on set, this big-screen adaptation has major potential to strike a chord among Meyer's dedicated fanbase. The author told us that she's enjoyed her involvement in the production and that being on the cave sets was particularly magical for her.

"It was so awesome. The cave set was enormous, it was vast, they're just so cool, so much fun to walk on," Meyer enthused. "It was kind of like someone built something out of your imagination just for you."

The also stars Jake Abel, William Hurt and Diane Kruger, and is slated for a March 2013 release.

This is a story from this past week that I hadn?t had a chance to post until now.

From Reuters:

JERUSALEM, May 24 (Reuters) ? Surging street violence against African migrants, including a rampage that an Israeli broadcaster dubbed a ?pogrom?, drew empathy for the rioters from the interior minister on Thursday.

Waving Israeli flags and chanting ?Deport the Sudanese?, residents of a low-income Tel Aviv neighbourhood where many of the border-jumpers from Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan live held a march late Wednesday that turned violent.

Police said 20 people were arrested for assault and vandalism. Trash cans were set alight, storefront windows were broken and a crowd attacked an African driving through the area, breaking his car?s windows. No serious injuries were reported.

Interviewing Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Army Radio likened the incident to pogrom attacks on Jews in 19th century Europe. Yishai bristled at such language, citing police findings that Sudanese and Eritrean migrants were a crime risk.

Fleeing poverty, fighting and authoritarian rule, some 60,000 Africans have crossed illegally into Israel through the relatively porous desert border with Egypt in recent years.

Unchecked, the number of Africans illegally in Israel could reach millions and overwhelm the citizenry, Yishai predicted.

?So what, the State of Israel, as the Jewish state, in the name of democracy, in the name of honouring U.N. resolutions, (should accept) a recipe for suicide?? he said.

?The truth has to be told, and believe me it is hard and it hurts, as we are the Jewish people, a merciful people.?

Usher claims it was because he was usually "held up at the gate trying to get in."

"She has not respected me and I didn't want to do the same," he said. "I always wanted to be respectful of the agreement that we had and try to abide by the rules that we had."

Foster wants full custody of their two sons while the singer is asking the court for increased visitation.

Roy dealt with Corporate Formation/M&A; Srinivasan employment law; Bali Intellectual Property; Peter Media and Entertainment and Kalyanaraman with the immigration aspect.

Roy, an associate in the Los Angeles office of Irell & Manella LLP, threw light on formation issues, corporate formalities and financing issues. He started by underscoring the importance of forming a company as it protects the entrepreneur and their assets while providing a sense of professionalism.? MUNICH (AP) -Chelsea will be planning for the future from an unexpected position of strength as champion of Europe following its dramatic upset victory over Bayern Munich.

Since Saturday, owner Roman Abramovich has the Champions League trophy he had craved since buying the club in 2003, plus a place in next season's competition which is key to the club's business plan and status among Europe's elite teams.

Now the Russian billionaire and his advisors must decide if Chelsea's immediate future includes new contracts for inspirational interim coach Roberto di Matteo and talismanic forward Didier Drogba.

The 34-year-old Drogba staked an emphatic claim to extend his eight-year stay by heading the 88th-minute goal which leveled a one-sided match at 1-1. He then followed up by stroking home the decisive penalty in the shootout at Bayern's home stadium.

Di Matteo could hardly do more during his three-month audition since being promoted from assistant to fired coach Andre Villas-Boas, lifting the most coveted club trophy in world football, plus the FA Cup.

"Roberto is certainly in the mix and he's done a great job for us and he has to have serious consideration," Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said Sunday. "We've put (the appointment) aside for the last five to eight weeks. Now in the next few weeks we have to sit down, figure it out and do what's best for Chelsea."

Chelsea's players were united in their praise for Drogba after another unlikely win to follow eliminating Barcelona in the semifinals.

"Of course, Didier is one of the best strikers in the world," said forward Juan Mata, who had Chelsea's opening penalty saved in the 4-3 shootout win. "He is very important for us, he scored a really important goal, so he deserves everything."

Drogba's wage demands would have been an expensive luxury had Chelsea lost and failed to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Chelsea earned around ?60 million ($77 million) in prize money from competition organizer UEFA this season. "No Israeli government since 1967 has done even a smidgen of what was needed in order to unify the city in practical terms. That is a tragedy that is going to lead us, for want of another choice, to making inevitable political concessions," Olmert told the Maariv daily.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and immediately annexed the area, home to sensitive Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy sites as well as a large Arab population. The Palestinians hope to make east Jerusalem the capital of an independent state including the neighboring West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Olmert said the notion of a united Holy City is unrealistic. He pointed to a number of Arab neighborhoods in east Jerusalem, saying they have not been integrated into the rest of the city.

"We can't unite them and connect them to the real fabric of life in Jerusalem, and except for grief, we haven't gotten anything from them," he said.

Olmert went through a dramatic political transformation late in his career.

As mayor from 1993 to 2003, he was an outspoken hard-liner opposed to concessions to the Palestinians. Then, while prime minister from 2006 to 2009, he pursued a peace agreement envisioning broad territorial concessions to the Palestinians before a corruption case forced him to step down.

In those talks, Olmert offered to turn over parts of east Jerusalem to the Palestinians, and have Jerusalem's Old City, home to the most sensitive religious sites, be administered by an international consortium including Israelis, Palestinians, Americans, Jordanians and Saudis.

Olmert claimed his talks with the Palestinians came tantalizingly close to an agreement. The Palestinians have said Olmert did not go far enough.

Since taking power three years ago, Netanyahu has repudiated Olmert's willingness to partition the city. With a newly expanded coalition, Netanyahu has cemented a formidable majority for his hardline policies.

"We have a great obligation to the unity and development of Jerusalem," Netanyahu said at the start of his weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday, as he marked what Israel calls "Jerusalem Day."

The Palestinians have refused to conduct peace talks with Netanyahu unless he halts settlement construction in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. About 200,000 Israelis live in east Jerusalem, approaching the Arab population of about 280,000. Netanyahu says talks should resume without any preconditions.

On Sunday, Israel marked the anniversary with a series of marches and speeches throughout the city. The Palestinians' chief peace negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said the Israeli celebrations were "clear proof" that Israel is not interested in peace. "Clearly, this behavior reflects the mentality of a colonizer, rather than a supposed peace partner."

The status of Jerusalem is among the most explosive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, defying resolution throughout two decades of on-again, off-again peace talks. Today, the Arab and Jewish sections of the city are worlds apart.

Also Sunday, Israel's Shin Bet security service said it had arrested nine Palestinians who tried to kidnap Israelis in the West Bank. The agency said in a statement that the ring made three unsuccessful kidnapping attempts in March, hoping to ransom the Israelis for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

The supports and opportunities available at community schools can include academic and enrichment programs before and after school and during the summer, medical and mental health services, food assistance, mentoring, internships, college counseling and a variety of social services.

And enrollment is up significantly in Cincinnati schools, including the return of middle-class families to the district.

An organization called Say Yes to Education offers the promise of college scholarships to students in six cities, and works back from there -- providing the academic, health, social, family and legal supports students need to achieve the goal of attending college. In 2009, Say Yes launched a citywide program for all students in Syracuse, N.Y. Already, Say Yes Syracuse has raised or leveraged more than $43 million for scholarships and services, helping nearly 2,000 students enroll in college. More children are staying in school: The number of students leaving after ninth grade decreased by 44 percent from 2009 to 2010. And the benefits extend beyond schools and students. Community schools create an environment where everyone can do their best -- kids are better able to learn, and teachers can focus more on instruction, knowing their students' needs are being met.

Karl Logan, the principal of a SUN Community School in Multnomah County, Ore., says that in the absence of the social, emotional and physical supports that community schools provide students, "teachers will fill that void, because that's just what they do." When students have ready access to such services, teachers are able to teach.

In this era of ongoing budget austerity, many community schools have proven to be an efficient and effective way to provide much-needed services. A recent study by the Coalition for Community Schools found that, on average, districts leverage $3 from community partners for every dollar they allocate. Coordinating service delivery can help eliminate both harmful gaps and costly duplication of services.

It's time to stop ignoring poverty and the realities that disadvantaged students face. We must instead address the factors that can and do impede student achievement and well-being. At a time when some "leaders" seek to hold others accountable for struggling schools but shirk their own responsibilities, the community schools strategy offers a constructive model of shared responsibility and effective solutions. Let's see more leaders help more communities benefit from this approach.
