Every now and then, life kisses us on the lips." So wrote Spanish poet and composer Joan Manuel Serrat to describe those magical moments, or people, that unexpectedly transform our lives. Philip Gould has been one of those enlightened beings who through words, actions and interactions, has enhanced the life of all those blessed by his friendship.
I met Philip six years ago. He was a British representative to an advisory board I chaired. His business card read: "Lord Philip Gould." He was my first Lord--Baron Gould of Brookwood--so I felt a wisecrack was merited. "We fought a war over titles like these, and we won. So, if you do not mind, I will call you Philip," I said. That was the beginning of a relationship that help me define the word leadership.
Philip, who studied history at the London School of Economics and developed communication expertise in the advertising world, became a political strategist and consultant in 1985. He eventually became one of the architects of New Labor and one of Tony Blair's closest strategy and polling advisers. In his role, he helped co-write the New Labor manifesto, which confirmed the move of the party from the left to the center, and pledged minimum wages, human rights and regional devolution of power to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. His 5-year-old daughter, Georgia, appeared on the cover of the document.
I frequently spend hours talking to Philip about leadership. He is an idealist firmly anchored in reality. Philip believes that leaders who have a clear and hopeful vision for the future can communicate that vision in ways people understand and feel inspired by, while also having the political know-how and fortitude to carry it through to completion.
Philip is a believer in the power of the human spirit. A true progressive liberal, Philip is convinced that people will surpass their self-imposed limitations through opportunities, encouragement and support. He is relentless in the pursuit of a worthy vision and believes that resilience is an essential quality in a leader--"If at first you don't succeed you must try and try again!"
At the root of his philosophy there is one basic thought: leaders are defined by their moral compass. We live in a world of increased complexity, where leaders in every corner of life are impacted by information overflow, globalization, and macro-economic challenges. To balance the conflicting priorities of an ever-changing world and multiple stake holders, a leader needs to be anchored in purpose.
Purpose is the driving force of our life, the work that will define our legacy. It is what we want to be remembered by, not by the world necessarily, but by the people who love us. Purpose is the impact we have on the things and people we touch. According to Philip, purpose or moral compass is defined by the answer to several questions, such as: What are we here to do? What is our motivation? How do we intend to carry ourselves through the process? Do we have the "never break" principles in the journey?
Philip believes in the dialectic of history. To every action, there is a reaction that leads to synthesis. His views on the dialectic are not conceptual or cerebral but personal. As leaders we are defined by the circumstances or actions that affect our lives, but more importantly the reactions that we have against those circumstances. Man is a writer, not merely an actor, in his own life.
Sadly and most recently, Philip has had the opportunity to showcase these principles in his own life. My friend has been fighting cancer for two years. Throughout the ordeal, Philip has been determined to respond with resilience. He does not use his time to complain. Rather, in every phone call, he takes time to explain what his current experience means and the lessons he is learning.
In his fight, he is taking time to evolve the "dialectic model" and its application to modern leadership. His illness has provided a journey of self-discovery and exploration with the dialectic. He now believes that the root of all leadership issues lies on our ability to integrate the material side of our life with the spiritual.
These are his words: "I have always viewed the world of political life through the lens of Hegel's dialectic, seeing politics not in terms of the immediate moment but as a continuing flow of events, not linear but interactive, each event a consequence of something that has happened before, and in turn a cause of something that will happen later, part of a sequence of action and reaction that does not end and cannot end.
It is by living a life of purpose and finding purpose in the life that we live that we are able to bridge the divide between material and spiritual. It is how we make our lives whole. It is how we become what we truly are." Nothing else needs to be said.

As we understand it, Kyle Orton was so close to being traded to the Dolphins that travel arrangements to Miami had been made.? But the Dolphins got cold feet, due in part to Orton?s demands for a long-term deal.
And so when Orton and Tebow made it to practice for the first time together this year, Orton had a great day, Tebow had a horrible day, and it all went downhill (for Tebow) from there.
Though Tebow widely is regarded as a guy who struggles in practice and gets it together on game day (it?s a reputation he had during his time at Florida), the recent experiences of new Broncos coach John Fox are believed to have helped Orton?s cause.? Fox, who was 2-14 last year in Carolina with rookie Jimmy Clausen taking plenty of lumps (and losing plenty of games), surely has no desire to go 2-14 again with a work-in-progress quarterback.
Of course, this hardly means that Orton will lead the team to a record of 14-2.? Concerns remain regarding his in-game abilities during the fourth quarter and in the red zone, which possibly explains Fox?s decision to give some red-zone reps with the first team to Brady Quinn.
Regardless of what the Broncos do in 2011 ? and regardless of what some in the media think of Tebow ? the team seems to remain committed to their young quarterback?s long-term development, even if the team hasn?t done more over the past several weeks to throw water on the parade of Tebow critics.? That?s why folks like Woody Paige of the Denver Post have opted not to give up on Tebow, and it?s why we won?t, either.? Unless the rest of the team plays a lot better than it did in 2010, the Broncos eventually will slide out of contention in the AFC West, and the time will come for Tebow to show what he can do.? What he does with that opportunity in 2011 will go a long way toward determined whether he?s the guy who?ll get the job in 2012.
Right now, it?s way too early to say he will.? But it?s also way too early to say he won?t.
VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. ? Taking his own advice not to linger at the beach, President Barack Obama cut short his family's vacation on Martha's Vineyard and returned to Washington late Friday to await the landfall of a Hurricane Irene, which he warned could be a "historic" storm.
Joined by his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha, Obama boarded his Marine One helicopter at the island's airport and flew to Cape Cod, where they transferred to Air Force One for the flight home.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the president felt it prudent to be back in Washington when Irene strikes the Eastern Seaboard. Obama informed his staff shortly after urging millions of Americans in the path of the storm to heed instructions from state and local officials, especially if directed to evacuate.
"Don't wait, don't delay," Obama said. The storm was on course to rake the coastline from North Carolina to New England over the weekend.
The president, speaking from his vacation rental on the island, said the federal government is "bringing all federal resources to bear" in response.
"I cannot stress this highly enough, if you are in the projected path of this hurricane you have to take precautions now," he said.
Illustrating government preparations, Earnest said that the administration conducted a national exercise to test emergency preparedness in 2009. He said the exercise included a simulated hurricane that struck New York City. He said the president participated in that exercise.
Though Martha's Vineyard was in Irene's path, Earnest said Obama's decision to return to Washington Friday night, instead of Saturday as planned, was not made out of worry about his personal safety.
Obama has been vacationing in Martha's Vineyard since Aug. 18, though the holiday's been repeatedly interrupted amid the upheaval in Libya, Tuesday's East Coast earthquake and preparations for the new jobs and debt package Obama's unveiling next month.
Obama said he had been briefed on Irene's status Friday morning by top federal officials. He also talked to governors of states and mayors of communities in the expected hurricane path, including mayors Michael Bloomberg of New York and Michael Nutter of Philadelphia.
As the president spoke, rains from Irene's outer bands began hitting the Carolinas, along with 6- to 9-foot waves. On Martha's Vineyard, though, Obama stood in the shade of a poplar tree outside a gray-shingled cottage. Otherwise it was bright sunshine, not a cloud in the sky.
The president cited two government websites, one in English and one in Spanish, that provide advice on how to prepare for emergencies: http://www.ready.gov and http://www.listo.gov.
He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been deploying teams along Irene's projected path. The agency has millions of liters of water, millions of meals and tens of thousands of cots and blankets positioned along the Eastern Seaboard, he said.
And the American Red Cross has been preparing shelters in North Carolina and other states, he said.
Obama cautioned that it would take time after the storm to begin rescue operations and get resources to people in need.
"So the more you can do to be prepared now, making a plan, make a supply kit , know your evacuation route, follow instructions of your local officials, the quicker we can focus our resources after the storm on those who need help the most," he said.
"All indications point to this being a historic hurricane."
Two years ago, Obama's first vacation on Martha's Vineyard as president was delayed by Hurricane Bill.
